THE MORNING AFTER
Survivors of the disaster from the nearby Jayaprakash Nagar colony stand in front of the Union Carbide factory one day after it leaked 40 tonnes of toxic gas into the city. Their eyes and lungs have been badly damaged by exposure to the gas.

LONELY SURVIVOR
This elderly woman, badly injured when exposed to the poisonous gas, is the sole survivor from her family. Suffering from serious injuries, she faces an uncertain future.

A SUFFERING FAMILY
There are thousands of such families in Bhopal. Each family member who has survived the tragedy - father, mother, children -suffers the same physical problems. Their eyes water, their lungs are permanently damaged and they always feel breathless.

CHILD CEMETERY
At least 8,000 people were killed within the first three days of the disaster. The huge number of deaths sent overwhelming shockwaves throughout the community. Because of insufficient burial space, many had to be taken to a mass grave.

SACKS FULL OF SKULLS
The victims' skulls were discarded following forensic examination at the Hamidia Hospital. Medical experts believed that the Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) gas inhaled by the people of Bhopal might have caused fatal injuries to their brains.

VOWS TO FIGHT ON
"I was the man in charge of law and order that night and every one in Bhopal will tell you that I was the only senior officer of the administration in action. Everyone else had fled to safety, leaving the city and its people to their own devices. But I have paid a heavy price. I have survived, but with a clutch of ailments. My son, who was then just two years old, has severe physical problems. Once I am through with this job, I will surely tell the entire story," says Swaraj Puri, as he tends to his eyes. Puri was the
superintendent of police for Bhopal district when the disaster struck and is now an Additional Director General of Police.
